(P6) explain potential legal implications of using and editing graphical images

Copyright

Copyright is a law which decides who owns a certain item and who has a right to copy the item from the owner. Often if someone wants to use an items that belongs to someone else, then the owner of the item needs to be contacted and asked permission for the item to be used. The copyright laws vary in each country.

Indentifying Copyright

There are ways of identifying ownership of an item. Sometimes there will be the name of the owner on the image. On wikitravel, the Sydney Opera house is on the Syndey, Australia column, you click on the image and a seperate page appears. Then, the file history and when the image was uploaded to the site appears, with the users name, and there is a comment if the image has been copied from another site.

Gaining Permission

If you want to upload an image to your website, then you need permission off the owner to do so. The ways to contact the owner are by email or telephone although email is more common. If you want to get an image on your website that belongs to you, then the copyright is with you and you can put it on your site.

Copyright Free

Copyright Free images can be used by anyone. These images can be spotted easily because it is clearly stated that they are copyright free.
